Following news last week on Kevlar expansion plans in Northern Ireland, DuPont Advanced Fiber Systems (AFS) have provided an update on the latest in a series of global Kevlar capacity increases.

Last week, NetComposites reported on Dupont plans to expand production of Kevlar at a factory in Northern Ireland to accommodate increased demand for the fibre. DuPont AFS expects production expansion will increase global Kevlar capacity by more than 10 percent.

Between 2000 and 2004, DuPont AFS successfully completed three Kevlar high-performance fibre expansion projects at its Spruance and Maydown facilities. Most recently, DuPont added leading-edge New Fiber Technology (NFT) capacity in Spruance which was finished ahead of schedule in early 2004. For the current expansion, DuPont AFS began its investments earlier this year, and has already made significant progress in enhancing productivity on current assets at Spruance and Maydown.

In addition to DuPont’s investment, Invest Northern Ireland, the Northern Ireland regional business development organization will provide support based on the growth in production and employment at the Maydown site.

“Global demand for DuPont Kevlar has soared with the need for safety and security worldwide,” said William J. Harvey, vice president and general manager – DuPont AFS. “This global capacity expansion is a critical step in growing the Kevlar business, maintaining our leadership in the performance fibres market, and delivering the innovation customers expect from us. This increase is the latest in a series of expansions that demonstrate how much value customers around the world have for DuPont Kevlar. Increasing production capacity will help us continue to meet the growing needs of our customers in all regions and across the entire Kevlar product line.”

DuPont Kevlar brand fibre (Aramid) enhances the lightweight strength of products in a wide variety of safety and high performance applications, including body armour and protective apparel, performance materials, and consumer products.
