DSM Quality Management System

DSM Composite Resins has introduced a global Quality Management system covering all eleven of their production sites, technical and sales centres – throughout Europe as well as in the USA. All sites are covered by a single ISO 9001:2000 certificate.

In the spirit of Total Quality Management (TQM), the new system is certified according to the International Standard ISO 9001:2000. Substantial investment and organisational commitment have meant that the former situation whereby each site had its own quality procedures, has now been replaced by a single Quality Management system, founded on the shared best practices operated from each location.

Business Group Director, Jan Paul de Vries enthusiastically received the certificate from Piet Brok, who led the team of BVQI auditors (Bureau Veritas Quality International). He summed up the essence of TQM: ‘DSM Composite Resins’ Quality Management is very much a living system – fully integrated and aligned to our new organisational structure and adjusted at a central level. The fact that the quality procedures are validated to the International Standard ISO 9001:2000, demonstrates our commitment to continuous improvement. It also fits with the quality expectations of our direct customers and end-customers, like those in the automotive sector.’

Dimitri de Vreeze, Business Director Structural Resins explained what it meant to DSM Composite Resins. ‘From a customer perspective, as well as internally, the benefit is consistency and harmony in all our working practices. Since the composite industry has become larger and more international, our different sites are no longer just serving their local markets. Adopting a one-company business strategy requires uniform procedures for quality and operational transparency.’

The new Quality Management system is consistent with the company’s ‘Principal Agent’ model, whereby the Principal is the central hub of the business, administering and coordinating demand chain activities throughout the organization. This leaves the Agent responsible for manufacturing the product and providing field sales and technical support. ‘Our organizational structures now reflect our international position’, Dimitri de Vreeze explained. ‘which is especially important in our business as structural resins are very logistically demanding in terms of their production, storage and transportation complexities.’

As Jan Paul de Vries concluded: ‘the goal of DSM Composite Resins is to achieve excellence across all areas of business to best serve the needs of our employees, our customers and their end-markets. The new Quality Management system creates the organisational and personnel frameworks necessary to achieve this. DSM safety, health and environmental best practices are already benchmarks within our industry and TQM is consistent with DSM’s guiding principles of People, Planet, Profit.’
