Dow Corning Corp. and Composites Optics Inc. Have formed a strategic alliance to commercialize silicone resin formulations for Missile Radome Applications.
The combination of COI¡¦s more than two decades of industry expertise and the unique performance and processing advantages of Dow Corning¡¦s resins will deliver value to customers in a variety of industries, such as aerospace and defense.
The first product resulting from this development alliance is a Radome, fabricated by COI using Dow Corning toughened addition cure silicone resin and quartz fiber, for initial use in missiles where excellent electrical perfomance is essential even after exposure to temperatures over 750„a F.
These new materials not only exhibit typical silicone performance, like high thermal stability, low moisture uptake, low di-electric and great fire / smoke / toxicity performance, but can also be made available with a wide range of cure profiles and viscosities valuable to larger volume molding and prepreg processes.
¡§We are introducing a brand new class of high-performance thermoset resins. This represents a breakthrough in technology that enables us to make toughened addition cure silicone resins¡¨, said Herschel Reese, Dow Corning Composites Program Manager. ¡§We look forward to working with COI and their customers to explore the possibilities that our composites offer in these applications.¡¨
