Dilutec sought to stand out by producing tailor-made gelcoats and today, it has a portfolio of more than 300 items, the largest of its kind in Brazil.
“Over 50% of the gelcoats produced by Dilutec are tailor-made. This even creates some difficulties when it comes to inventory, but it is a small price to pay compared to the excellent customer receptivity to our products,” says Marcos Pannellini, Commercial Manager of Dilutec.
In addition to formulating exclusive colours, for example shades that resemble antique sanitary ware, such as pergamon and seashell pink, Dilutec explains that it ‘customises’ the gelcoat according to the peculiarities of the moulding processes of its users. “We don’t work with two or three products on the shelf, which would require the manufacturer of the part to adapt its processes. On the contrary, we understand their production system and tailor our gelcoat to ensure the best result in terms of application, finish and durability,” adds Pannellini.
The company says it now has dozens of examples of successful application in more sophisticated composite moulding processes, such as continuous lamination, RTM, SMC, BMC and pultrusion, and in different segments, such as the automotive, nautical and construction segments. Pannellini continues, “Right now, we are looking for similar opportunities in the wind energy market. We learned over the years that gelcoat must be treated as a specialty, rather than just a commodity that composite moulders are forced to buy.”
The strategy in the gelcoat operation accurately reproduces the model adopted by Dilutec in the thinner area, says Pannellini. Instead of specialising in only two types – one for cleaning, and the other for diluting paint –, the company found its greatest advantage in tailor-made production. As a result, more than 200 formulations are cataloged at Dilutec’s laboratory.
“In some cases our product is more balanced than the thinner recommended by the paint manufacturer itself. This is thanks to our comprehensive study of the application and the several chromatographic analyses we performed,” he concludes.
Besides producing gelcoat and thinner, Dilutec also operates as a distributor of Ashland resins and equipment of BÜFAtec Spain.
