Diaphorm Awarded Patent for Composite Material Technology

The Diaphorm division of Solectria Corporation announced that United States Patent No. 6,478,926 has been awarded to Solectria for “”Apparatus and Method for Forming Structural Preforms.””

“”Composite materials hold great promise for improved performance and reliability of a vast range of commercial and industrial products,”” said Vasilios Brachos, engineering and operations manager of the Diaphorm division, and co-inventor of the Diaphorm process. “”Our cost-effective and energy-efficient Diaphorm technology opens up the possibility of using composites manufacturing for new classes of products and applications previously considered cost-prohibitive,”” said Brachos.

Using woven unidirectional or mat fabrics of glass, carbon, or aramid fibers, the patented Diaphorm Preforming process produces 3-dimensional preforms that are ready to be placed directly into an infusion mold, thus reducing cycle times and material waste. Requiring only single-sided tooling made from inexpensive materials, Diaphorm Preforming technology allows multiple tools to be run simultaneously. With the ability to tailor machine design to a specific application, the Diaphorm(tm) process can be adapted to meet the production requirements for parts of varying geometry. This capability permits quick, inexpensive prototyping and fast throughputs, resulting in low-cost preforms
