During Materialica and the co-located eCar exhibition, which took place in Munich from October 19-21 2010, several two day conferences were run on the themes of materials such as ceramics, light metals and composites.
The composites conference program committee did an excellent job bringing together eighteen papers across a broad variety of relevant topics. Some 70 to 80 participants had a chance to hear about some of the latest development in the field of composites. This included papers from ranging from theoretical and academic standpoints on composite materials to presentations from Airbus and Audi on how things stand with composites in their specific industries.
There were application specific presentations related to vehicle concepts and design followed by a section on manufacturing technologies which included an interesting and broad range of papers from KUKA on automated NDT, from Zoltek owned Entec on automated high speed filament winding and from Premium Aerotec on automated production of large fuselage skins.
The conference opened and closed with two fascinating presentations from two academics, one on how nature inspires us with the most wonderful design and properties of biometric materials and the second on the hidden design laws of nature. This was a refreshing conference in that it combined the best of what university research has to offer with the latest developments in industry with plenty of opportunity to network with the other participants.
