Composites One (booth 600) issued a number of exciting business opportunities through a new facility in Florida, details of a future acquisition of Fib-Chem industries and details of a venture to offer pre-packaged composite kits.
Kit Concepts, a new service providing composites manufacturers with pre-packaged fibreglass sheets cut to size and nested in the order needed, were used at Composites One’s technical demonstrations of closed mould processes on Thursday in The DemoZone.
“We developed the program to help composites manufacturers bypass the time-consuming task of manually cutting and loading fibreglass material,” said Tom Hunter, Kit Concepts Production Manager. “Using automated cutting and computer-aided nesting equipment, we cut, mark and package fibreglass sheets to fabricator specifications, helping customers produce better parts in less time while eliminating rework costs.”
Each kit contains fibreglass material that is cut to the customer’s patterns and CAD drawings. Cut material is then packed together in a single kit, with sheets placed in the order that they are used in the manufacturing process. A number of composites manufacturers in a variety of industries are now using Kit Concepts for applications ranging from boat hulls to automotive parts to manhole covers. The pre-cut fibreglass material is ideal for customers using closed mould processes such as light resin transfer moulding and closed cavity bag moulding, as well as those using open mould processes.
Composites One recently opened its latest distribution in Lakeland, Florida, the new 75,000 square foot facility is significantly larger than their previous facilityin Lakeland. The second largest of Composites One’s 32 distribution centres, the new plant was designed with state-of-the-art data and voice relays, making information instantly accessible in any area at any time. The building also houses regulatory compliant resin storage areas, drumming and toting areas.
Composites One has also signed a letter of intent to acquire the assets of Fib-Chem Industries, Inc. Fib-Chem is one of the largest independent regional distributors of composite materials and is located in Monessen, Pennsylvania.
The acquisition, the fourth in 5 years for Composites One, continues to reinforce Composites One as a leading composites supplier in North America. In a statement, Leon Garoufalis, Composites One President and Chief Operating Officer, said, “This acquisition will be a perfect complement to Composites One. Fib-Chem has a long record of providing excellent service and the combination of our service philosophies and product offering will further benefit customers.”
Garoufalis further added that, “We have always been impressed with Fib-Chem’s reputation and commitment to customers and we look forward to carrying on that heritage. Our objective is a seamless and positive transition.”
Larry Bujdos, President and owner of Fib-Chem, added, “Fib-Chem has always based our business on satisfying the customer and I am very pleased to combine our business with Composites One. I have seen the success of their other acquisitions and know they are the right company to buy Fib-Chem. The customers we have serviced over the years will realize many additional advantages as we bring the businesses together.”
Manufacturers learned how Closed Mould Technologies can help their business grow at technical demonstrations presented by Composites One yesterday and again today in the DemoZone. Live demonstrations of Light Resin Transfer Molding (Light RTM), Closed Cavity Bag Molding (CCBM) and the Vacuum Infusion Process (VIP) were conducted by Composites One Technical Managers Jim Gordon and John Alexion, and RTM North President Doug Smith. In addition to seeing a live demonstration of closed mould processes, participants learned about mould preparation, proper techniques, and what types of materials and equipment are needed.
