Swiss bow maker, Willi Heuberger’s prize winning bow models were made using Huntsman Advanced Materials RenLam laminating system.
Drawing on more than 25 years of design and practical experience of competition bows, Heuberger developed his bow model using a wet-lay up laminating technique with reinforced carbon fibre and RenLam LY 113 laminating resin and Ren HY 97-1 hardener to make the limbs of the bow.
Advised by Huntsman Advanced Materials Technical Support team, Heuberger used this RenLam low viscosity laminating system because of its mechanical and dynamic properties. The bow limbs it produced exhibited excellent strength and flexibility and a fine surface quality for a smooth finish. The flexibility of the material also gave it the high energy storage and release abilities needed in a bow.
The bow successfully underwent a series of load tests including bow deformation tests under defined loads and determination of the required pulling loads to bring the bow to its release point. It is now being used as a high performance sports bow by National Olympic Teams and for top level competitions including the Swiss National Championships in March 2006, where nine medals were won by archers using the Heuberger composite bows.
