Composite Solutions, Inc in Its First Hospital Retrofit

Composite Solutions, Inc. announced that it has received a contract with Ace Restoration (Ace) of Fullerton, CA to perform the seismic retrofit of the Kern County Medical Center near Bakersfield, CA. CSI will use composite retrofitting technology validated for over a decade in the Charles Lee Powell Structural Research Laboratories at the University of California, San Diego. The retrofitting method that CSI will be using on the Kern County facility is licensed to CSI. CSI and Ace are teaming up to subcontract as part of the $4 million retrofit of the hospital. The retrofit project is part of the medical center’s compliance plan to address the requirements of California Senate Bill 1953 requiring all acute care facilities to meet strict seismic requirements. Lightweight, non corrosive composite jackets will be used to strengthen the lower level columns of the hospital instead of steel jackets which have been proven to be subject to corrosion and difficult to install. Composites provide significant cost savings and minimize intrusion to the facility and its critical activities, while improving the seismic performance of the support columns. By law, there are thousands of buildings that must be earthquake retrofitted. In California alone, 473 hospitals have been targeted by the state legislature for mandatory earthquake retrofit over the next several years. According to the California Healthcare Association, it could cost $10 billion for the necessary retrofits, which poses an enormous market potential for CSI and its related entities. CSI provides end-to-end solutions for a variety of industries that use fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. Using FRP technology developed by and licensed from the University of California, San Diego, CSI offers a comprehensive package from analysis through construction. Primary uses of the technology include structural strengthening, earthquake retrofitting and blast hardening of a variety of structures.
