A composite aerodynamic front end cab has been developed in India by KINECO for Integral Coach Factory (Indian Railway) for their new high horsepower DEMU (Diesel Electric Multiple Unit) train.
Styled on the lines of high speed trains in Europe, DEMU train fitted with two such cabs has already been flagged off by the Indian Minister of State for Railways, Shri R. Velu earlier this year.
The complete product design as well as structural design for the cab have been carried out by KINECO including cab interiors and the driver’s desk.
Aerodynamic front end cab is developed from glass fibre composite material.
Apart from the reduction in weight compared with conventional materials like steel, the complicated shape of the cab can be easily moulded, providing the designer with greater freedom to design the cab with more aerodynamic external form thus reducing drag substantially.
The overall size of developed composite aerodynamic front end cab is 2835 x 3245 x 2620 mm (L x W x H) with the cab designed to suit speeds of 140 KMPH.
The gfrp front end cab is designed to take wind load at higher train speeds as well as other impact loads as specified by Railways.
The Front end cab is manufactured by employing advanced process of vacuum bagging with ‘E’ glass reinforcement and epoxy based resin system which ensures void free laminate, higher glass content and higher structural properties of composite laminate. The structural design of the front end cab consists of a composite skin backed with composite stiffeners having solid rectangular sections. The composite internal skin is bonded to the main load bearing composite structure of cab with glass wool insulation in between.
The cattle guard as well as side skirting are also made with fibreglass with mild steel support structure.
