The EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Composites (CIMComp) will be hosting an Open Day on the 23 June 2015 at @Bristol in Bristol, UK.
CIMComp underpins the development of next-generation composites manufacturing processes based on low cost, short cycle times, efficiency and sustainability. CIMComp is led by the University of Nottingham and involves three other leading academic institutions in composites manufacture as core partners – the Universities of Bristol, Cranfield and Manchester. There are five additional Universities associated to CIMComp through funded project activities (Exeter, Glasgow, Imperial College, Queen’s Belfast and Sheffield). Current activities involve 34 industrial partners and four Technology Centres, with a portfolio of 33 inter-related projects and an Industrial Doctoral Centre, with a total portfolio value of over £35 million; this forms a key element in the UK Composites manufacturing R&D strategy.
The Open Day will enable the Centre to disseminate project results to all partners and the wider composites community, showing progress against its aims and how they fit within the wider UK composites strategy. Attendees are invited to hear about the latest in composites manufacturing innovations including process modelling and automated manufacturing, textile development and advanced joining techniques. The programme for the day is as follows:
|Prof Andy Long, CIMComp Director|
|10:10||Keynote – The UK composites strategy and the role of CIMComp|
|Prof Peter Chivers, Chief Executive, National Composites Centre|
|10:40||Development of 2D/3D braiding techniques for multi-axial preforming|
|Dhaval Jetavat, Research Fellow, University of Manchester|
|Posters and Table Top Displays|
|11:30||Fibre architecture design of 3D woven composite reinforcement with genetic algorithms–a unit cell based optimisation framework and performance assessment”|
|Dr Xuesen Zeng, Research Fellow, University of Nottingham|
|20x 2 min presentations on CIMComp projects|
|Posters and Table Top Displays|
|2:00||Keynote – Title TBC|
|Amir Rezai, Senior Scientist, BAE Systems|
|2:30||Hybrid composite of continuous and random carbon fibre architectures for high volume automotive applications|
|David Corbridge, PhD student, University of Nottingham|
|2:50||Manufacturing structural joints in CFRP using embedded metallic components|
|Lawrence Cook, Research Fellow, Cranfield University|
|3:20||Multifunctional hierarchical composite structures utilising carbon nanotube webs|
|Prof Brian Falzon, Queens University Belfast|
|3:40||Automated layup of sheet prepreg over complex geometries|
|Mike Elkington, PhD student, University of Bristol|
The Open Day coincides with the ICMAC Conference, 24 – 25 June which will be held at the same venue.
