Carbon/PEEK Implant Plate Assessed In Vivo

An extensive in vivo experiment performed at the AO Research Institute in Davos compared IcoTec’s Carbon/PEEK ‘Snake Plate’ with a titanium interlocking osteosynthesis plate.

Non-metallic implants have the advantage over metallic implants of reduction in artefact with CT and MR diagnostic imaging. In-vivo performance of a carbon fibre reinforced polyetheretherketone radiolucent plate (Snake Plate) with high stiffness and fixed angle converging screws was compared with a seven-hole titanium Locking Compression Plate (LCP), using a sheep tibial osteotomy (removal of a portion of the shin bone).

The results of the work showed that the Snake Plate appeared to represent a viable alternative to metallic implants for shaft fracture repair, with added advantages including radiolucency and high deformation resistance.
