Construction of a novel composite suspension bridge provided a bonding challenge which Permabond met with a two part epoxy adhesive E32.
The bridge was 50m long, 3m wide and spanned a busy new highway in the UK. It was constructed from GRP sections and all the moulded parts were bonded exclusively with Permabond E32.
Permabond E32 was chosen due to its high bond strength, curing speed and proven durability under stress and exterior exposure. The adhesive was supplied in 400ml cartridges, which allowed for simultaneous mixing and dispensing from a pneumatic gun. This enabled the contractors to undertake simple, rapid assembly of the bridge sections.
Permabond has also launched 4 new products designed for composite bonding applications: V1305 & V1315 structural acrylic adhesives are claimed to offer a choice of open time, rapid through cure and excellent adhesion to composites, thermoplastics and metals. E3334 is a patented adhesive offering high peel strength and room temperature cure, suitable for laminating dissimilar materials such as thermoset sheet and aluminium. QB5004 acrylic adhesive has fast cure and high bond strength to composites, suitable for small assembly and repair operations.
