Bombardier to expand operations and create 1,200 new jobs in Northern Ireland

Bombardier Aerospace is significantly raising aircraft production as well as expanding its Northern Ireland manufacturing operations. The company’s Belfast-based workforce will grow by 1,200-or 20 per cent-over the next two years. This involves a major investment by Bombardier at Belfast in plant, equipment, product development, and training. Bombardier’s Northern Ireland operation has excellent capabilities in the design and manufacture of aircraft fuselages, engine nacelles and advanced composite structures. In addition to its work for other manufacturers, the Belfast operation designs and produces major structures for seven Bombardier aircraft: the Global Express, Challenger, Learjet 45 and Continental business jets; and, the CRJ 100/200 and 700 Series jet airliners and Dash 8 Q400 turboprop airliner. Since acquiring the Belfast operations from the United Kingdom Government in 1989, Bombardier has made a significant investment in facilities, equipment, training and new product development. Bombardier is Northern Ireland’s largest manufacturing employer, with 5,763 workers in the design and production of aircraft structures and engine nacelles and a further 257 in the operation of Belfast City Airport. The expansion announced today will create 1,200 new jobs in design and production.
