BMW WilliamsF1 Team and QinetiQ are to form a partnership designed to inject innovative technologies into the development process of the UK’s F1 industry.
QinetiQ, a specialised UK technology organisation, will apply their technology expertise to assist the BMW WilliamsF1 Team in a number of key areas, including materials science, predictive aerodynamic disciplines and the application of GPS technology for testing data acquisition. Specific details of materials and technology being developed were not disclosed.
QinetiQ will use its Formula One partnership to communicate its technology offering to the global commercial marketplace and emphasise the strength and importance of British innovation.
On the announcement of the partnership, BMW WilliamsF1 Team Principal Frank Williams said, “”A significant part of our success is drawn from the skills of our partners, and I have little doubt that QinetiQ’s rich talent pool of British scientists and technology experts will make a real difference to our competitive performance. I am delighted that they are joining the team and we hope to be able to assist in the international promotion of their competencies.””
The QinetiQ technologies which will be utilised by the BMW WilliamsF1 Team in the first instance are:
QinetiQ will apply its understanding of materials developed for military aircraft to assist with car design. Materials developed for military applications are stronger and more heat-resistant than traditional materials, which means less needs to be used, potentially resulting in a lighter car.
Predictive aerodynamic disciplines:
Developed to determine the aerodynamic properties of stealth aircraft, QinetiQ’s software optimises aerodynamic design given a number of fixed parameters. The programme can be used to hone existing designs or to develop unusual alternative solutions.
Sir John Chisholm, QinetiQ’s Chief Executive reflected that, “”Formula One is a business which adopts the world’s most innovative technological developments well ahead of other businesses. A technical partnership with the BMW WilliamsF1 Team is a natural association for QinetiQ, where we can jointly demonstrate the power of British innovation to an international audience. We hope QinetiQ can make a substantive contribution to results on the race track and showcase the best of British technology.”” QinetiQ’s principal business is delivering brilliant solutions to important problems in the defence and security markets where it has unrivalled experience. The company also provides expertise to numerous clients operating in a wide range of industries, from aviation to telecommunications, from government to energy, and from healthcare to space.
