Belfast Metropolitan College has launched its new composites workshop in a state-of-the-art campus in Belfast, UK.

The composites workshop is based at the college’s new ‘e3’ building, a £16m building focusing on enterprise, employability and economic development (e3) and contains advanced manufacturing capability for the purposes of supporting product development and training needs within industry.

The college says one of its key objectives is to assist businesses in a wide range of areas, from fulfilling traditional educational requirements to assisting product innovation. Key manufacturing equipment available for such product development work is available at the college and is shown in the following list.

·         Scholz 1.5m diameter x 2m length autoclave;

·         Williams Industrial Services pre-former / hot-drape former;

·         MVP Single and dual part epoxy injection equipment;

·         Olympus Omniscan MX2 phased array inspection;

·         Freezer room.

Findhan Strain of Belfast Metropolitan commented, “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Scholz Maschinenbau and Williams Industrial Services in particular for their ability to deliver highly customised equipment to suit our needs and I look forward to many exciting, industry-led projects with these machines in the near future. We have manufactured a number of components on the equipment already and the quality has been excellent”.

The college, which is also accredited as a Centre of Excellence by the National Skills Academy, offers training courses in a wide range of areas such as accredited short courses through the Academy or customised training specific to the business needs.  The range of technical areas is comprehensive from wet lay-up to pre-preg laminating to composite repair and inspection.
