This year Base Group has sponsored the University of Birmingham’s racing team, UBRacing, as they took part in the Formula Student competition.

The Formula Student competition is considered to be the testing ground for the next generation of world class engineers. The challenge is to make a single-seat race car prototype to compete in static and dynamic tests demonstrating the technical capability of the vehicle.

Base Group has supported UBRacing by manufacturing the mould assembly for the team. To complete this, Base Group blocked up the high-temperature epoxy tooling board and used five-axis CNC milling technology to machine the parts required. Finally, each of the five parts were hand-finished and inspected within the design and manufacturing facility. By supplying the mould assembly for the vehicle, Base Group were able to support the team in minimising their costs, thus contributing to them ranking 9th in the cost minimisation element of the competition.

Philippa, the Head of Media for the University of Birmingham said, “The sponsorship that Base Group has provided has been a huge contribution to the quality of our bodywork this year. In the past, the bodywork moulds have been created using handmade bucks, therefore the accuracy and finish was relatively low. This year with their help, the bodywork can be designed using CAD and is therefore a much better finish and the end product is much better.”

Using CAD to design the vehicle contributed to the team ranking 24th in the design event which is a “marked improvement from previous years” explained Andrew Glen Cross, the Team Leader.

Overall the UBRacing team ranked 33rd out of 95 teams in the Formula Student competition.
