The ATR Group presented its Composite Space Frame Technology development for the automotive sector at the recent Frankfurt International Motor Show.
The Italian company, who design, prototype and mass produce structural parts and components in CFRP materials, see the important project as a new approach to vehicle structures. This breakthrough in composite materials for automotive applications is addressed to GT series car segment, where production rate ranges up to 20 units per day.
The company state that that “thick laminate construction, design for autoclave assembly and usage of composite technological diversity are the key points that give to “Composite Space Frame Technology” the potential for changing the trade-off between conventional metallic structures and advanced composite structures for vehicle applications” said Claudio Santoni, Head of Composite Structures Development at ATR Engineering, part of the ATR Group.
He added that“Production costs can be reduced by more than 55% Production rates can be increased up to 20 space frames per day. Weight savings exceed 40% in comparison with conventional aluminium structures, without affecting top class performances (stiffness, NVH and passive safety) of best practice composite applications”.
The ATR Group also exhibited some significant production samples of CFRP structural and aesthetic components for the automotive market, such as Porsche Carrera GT chassis, SLC k200 monocoque produced using “Structural Advanced RTM” (technology developed by ATR Group) and SLC R1 an F3 single-seater which is currently challenging in F3 Euroseries Championship.
