A series of new resin and gelcoat formulations from Ashland Composite Polymers were introduced at the Composites & Polycon 2006 show in St. Louis
Ashland say that new formulations of the Enguard WG-TS series of white gelcoats for tub/shower applications allow fabricators to use low spray-pressure and achieve superior application and spray properties. According to Ashland the new Enguard WG-TS gelcoats have passed the physical performance requirements for both the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Z 124.1-.2, and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) B45.5-94.
Their newly formulated Hetron FR620T-20M polyester resin is designed to offer improved wetting and low shrinkage for ultimate performance in architectural applications. “We’re very excited to bring this new formulation to market,” said Thom Johnson, industry manager for Ashland Composite Polymers. “The specially-designed formulation resulted from many discussions and trials with key customers.” They say that the resin now allows architects and engineers the opportunity to explore creative exterior building design while also meeting stringent fire code requirements. “Our new formulation has delivered laminates with Class 1 performance without the addition of antimony or other fire-resistant additives. This new low-VOC resin is ideally suited for hand lay-up, spray-up or filament winding, flame-retardant applications.”
Ashland has also developed a powder-prime capable sheet moulding compound (SMC) formulation and adhesive for automotive component assembly. The solution resulted from a combined development effort from Ashland’s teams in both composite and adhesive chemistry. Ashland’s Arotran 610 SMC resin, and the new Pliogrip 5500 epoxy adhesive allows composite components to be processed simultaneously with metal parts. Ashland say that preliminary laboratory tests have shown the combination provides performance characteristics that meet or exceed OEM requirements.
“Our tests have shown excellent adhesion to Ashland’s powder-prime Arotran 610 resin and coated metal, with cycle times as low as 60 seconds through conventional heated assembly fixtures,” said Rick Lupisella, marketing manager, Ashland Specialty Polymers & Adhesives. The adhesive formulation is also low in odour and features a favourable environmental profile.
