Vought Aircraft Industries has selected ASC Process Systems to join their 7E7 team in providing what will be the largest autoclave system in the world.
The autoclave will provide a working area of 30 feet in diameter and 75 feet in length. This will provide curing of fuselage sections 47 and 48 of the Boeing 7E7 Dreamliner. The mammoth autoclave will be field constructed at the new 7E7 subassembly facility in South Carolina in the US.
“The entire ASC team is excited to be a part of this monumental project” stated Dave Mason, the President of ASC Process Systems.
The autoclave will feature many ASC innovations, including full redundancy of critical systems which limits the likelihood of a failed cure, as well as ASC’s redundant CPC control system, currently installed on over 1,100 pieces of equipment world wide.
A spokesman for ASC told NetComposites that the autoclave will be capable of curing combined load of 200,000 LB of steel tooling, and composite parts. It is estimated that 2 full loads can be processed per 24 hour day. The autoclave will be rated at 150 PSIG @ 450ºF, and is equipped with a fully controllable vacuum system.
Support equipment such as cooling systems, vacuum systems, power, and controls systems will be manufactured at ASC’s new facility in Sylmar California, and shipped to the job site for installation.
Completion of the autoclave is scheduled for February, 2006. The image is of a smaller but similar ASC autoclave, of 10ft in diameter. The one used for the 7E7 will also have a door on a gantry crane rather than on a stationary hinge, as shown here.
