AGY has expanded its capacity to produce S-2 Glass yarns and rovings.
The expansion is expected to take place in two phases, with the initial phase completed in late January 2015 and the second phase reaching full production by July of this year. “The expansion in our capacity comes on the back of AGY’s successful launch of several new products in the S-2 Glass fibre range,” commented Patrick Burns, President & CEO. “The success of these new S-2 Glass fibre products, along with the growth AGY is seeing in its traditional products and applications, has led to the addition of capacity with the goal of staying ahead of market demand.”
AGY explains that S-2 Glass fibres are produced in its proprietary melting technology, with the capacity expansion adding a significant number of new positions in the company’s Aiken, South Carolina, US, facility. The use of this proprietary equipment allows AGY to increase capacity without affecting existing production volumes. These positions can be installed in a much quicker time frame than a traditional glass fibre furnace. “The new capacity will come at a time when AGY is moving into new markets such as chopped fibres for thermoplastic compounds and is seeing increased utilisation of S-2 Glass yarns in aerospace and other structures,” commented Alan Pekarik, Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “AGY has worked hard to position S-2 Glass fibres in a number of new programs and is excited to be adding capacity to ensure continued growth in high performance markets.”
