Activa Composites Limited officially opens at its new premises in Surrey, UK bringing advanced composite manufacture for the premier motorsport industry to the area for the first time.
Activa Composites Limited is a reincarnation of the composites side of Activa Technology Limited which ceased trading in March of this year after 13 years, and formerly located in the ex. Brabham F1 HQ in Surrey, UK.
Activa’s work will feature on up to 8 of the 20 cars on the starting grid of the opening round of the Formula 1 World Championship in Melbourne, Australia in around 13 weeks time.
As well as producing work for the F1 teams, Activa’s motorsport interests will extend to projects in Touring Cars, the World Rally Championship, MotoGP and World Superbikes motorcycle racing. Activa will provide OEM services to low and medium volume sportscar manufacturers. In addition, aftermarket products will be sold both through direct retail and through agents, into respective markets for high performance sports and track orientated cars.
The new purpose designed facility at Newchapel boasts 6000 sq feet of space, including a 1000 sq/ft clean room area for composite lay-up, a pattern room, a modern LBBC Autoclave and a large oven facility capable of housing an entire GT monocoque chassis. The site boasts state-of-the-art equipment specially fitted for the production of parts, patterns and tools for F1, GT, touring and rally cars as well as high-performance motorbikes.
Activa also have an off-site machining and CAD facility with multi axis capability allowing high speed direct PC to pattern production of specialised tooling.
Herbie Blash, former Team Manager and Sporting Director of Brabham F1, FIA Official, and former Activa Technology Managing Director said “I am very excited at the revival of Activa. With all the key production staff on board I believe Activa have a strong future in the market, to continue providing very high quality work at a competitive price.”
Activa Managing Director, Arnie Webb, said “I am very pleased to have the opportunity to keep the Activa name alive. We have returned the Activa name to its former market position, and over the next 3-5 years intend to become the market leader. We have chosen to build a company focused on design, development, and manufacture a wide range of composite products for a diverse client base from F1 teams to yachtsmen, to interior designers. The production capacity of over 3500 laminating hours per month means Activa will also create local employment opportunities. Our overall business strategy is simply to provide the best available products and services to market at a reasonable price.”
Mr Webb said the firm also had contracts for components for F1 replica cars. He said it had an initial staffing level of eight but it was hoped this would grow to about 20 as it expanded and won new business. He added that the UK market for F1 parts alone was in the region of about £25m a year, and Activa would be seeking to garner part of the market almost immediately by providing manufacturing support to several teams.
“”The nature of our composite components business is highly specialised. Just take carbon fibre components for example. It is a vital ingredient used in many F1 parts. It is hand-made and lightweight, and yet has 10 times the strength of steel.””
