Cairns Chemicals (Pvt) Ltd is now fully owned by Astra Industries Ltd and moves into a new phase of its 35-year existence as a wholly-owned Zimbabwean entity.

Cairns Chemicals, soon to be renamed Astra Chemical, is one of the three companies resulting from the recent Astra Ltd unbundling.

“”This process has left Cairns Chemicals with an outstanding supply base and the management strength and flexibility to grow to new dimensions,”” said Julian Davies, managing director.

The company has a nationwide infrastructure with offices and handling facilities in Harare, Chegutu, Bulawayo and Chiredzi and is involved in the local manufacture of solvents and thinners, alcohols and vinegar.

Originally named National Chemical Products (Zimbabwe) Ltd, the company was set up by NCP South Africa in 1967 to market and distribute its wide variety of chemical products in this country. Since then it has grown to become one of the major suppliers and manufacturers in the chemical sector.

The company’s core products continue to be fibreglass resins and auxiliaries, caustic lye and flake solvents, thinners and alcohols and food and fine chemicals.

“”The ownership change has left us with an exceptionally strong external supply base and outstanding relationships with several independent producers who were formerly part of the large Sentrachem group,”” said Davies. – Staff Writer.
