Every year, JEC rewards the best cutting-edge and ingenious projects using and reinventing the use of composites in different categories, recognising the innovation and the full potential of composites.
In this edition, the cantilevered canopy developed by Graphenano Composites (Elche, Spain) together with Gazechim Composites Ibérica has won the Innovation Award in the Construction category for its ‘contribution of nanotechnology in composites for an avant-garde architectural design’.
Enabled by the design flexibility offered by composites, Graphenano and Gazechim designed and implemented a fully- reimagined, a large, avant-garde design-inspired canopy for Gazechim logistics headquarters building in Valencia, Spain. The surface area resembles the hardtop of a boat where concepts from naval architecture are transferred to civil architecture.
The structure, of more than 340 sqm, leverages the latest generation of Graphene-based nanotechnology composites, becoming the first construction application worldwide that uses this carbon technology in the polymeric matrix to enhance final composite performance. The graphene reinforcement improves the properties of flexural modulus and tensile strength, while also reducing the overall weight of structures.
This project also includes other Graphene doped elements, such as 275 sqm of GRP profiles in the office’s façade and 880 linear meters of profiles for shade slats. In addition, around 3000 linear meters of Graphene doped GRP rebars have been used to reinforce the concrete of some areas of the project.
To grant this award, JEC has been based on the following aspects of the Graphenano and Gazechim project:
Partners: Gazechim Composites Ibérica (Spain), Graphenano Composites (Spain), Chomarat (France), Owens Corning (Italy), Chem-Trend (Germany), Euromere (France), Gurit (Germany), Look Composites (Spain), Nouryon (The Netherlands), Obo (Germany), Omar Coatings (Spain), Polynt Composites (Spain), Polymec (Spain), Talleres Xúquer (Spain).
