3D Printed Drone Prototype Wins Red Dot 2018 Design Award

Hexadrone’s 3D printed Tundra prototype, manufactured by CRP Technology via laser sintering (LS) technology using Windform SP and Windform XT 2.0 carbon composite materials, has won the Red Dot Award 2018 in the drone category.

Tundra is Hexadrone’s first fully modular and easy-to-use drone for industrial and multi-purpose tasks.

The award ceremony took place in Essen, Germany, on 9 July, during the Red Dot Gala. A four-week exhibition of the winning products will see the Tundra prototype exhibited at the Red Dot Design Museum Essen.

The judging criteria included level of innovation, functionality, quality, ergonomics and durability.

“It is a very good news,” states Franco Cevolini, CTO at CRP Technology and creator of the Windform family of composite materials. “I congratulate Alexandre and the Hexadrone staff on their disruptive drone. Tundra is a concrete example of how the combination of LS and Windform allows for near endless possibilities, and the distinction Red Dot proves it once more!”

Tundra was designed by Raphael Chèze.

“I want to congratulate the award winners sincerely on their wonderful success in the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2018,” says Professor Dr Peter Zec, Founder and CEO of the Red Dot Award. “Success in the competition is proof of the good design quality of the products and once again shows that companies are on the right path. When I speak about good design I am referring to more than just an attractive product. All of the products are characterised by outstanding functionality. This demonstrates that the designers have understood their clients and their needs.”

The Red Dot Award: Product Design has roots dating back as far as 1955 and determines the best products created each year. In 2018, designers and manufacturers from 59 countries submitted more than 6,300 objects to the competition.
