Toho Tenax Develops Shock-Resistant Hybrid Prepreg

Toho Tenax is introducing a high-tensile, highly shock-resistant prepreg that incorporates carbon fibre developed for aerospace applications and carbon nanotubes (CNTs).

The hybrid prepreg has been employed by Mizuno in a new golf club shaft that weighs nearly 30% less than conventional shafts of the same thickness. According to Toho Tenax, the core company of the Teijin's carbon fibres and composites business, the high-tensile prepreg enables the shaft to bend as the ball is hit and then cuts the shock of impact by more than 10% to reduce club movement on the follow-through swing. The company reports that the combination of carbon fibre and CNTs delivers a carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) that offers improved tensile strength and shock resistance. The CFRP also is extremely durable because the carbon fibre and matrix resin do not delaminate under strong impact thanks to the balanced dispersion of CNTs.

Teijin is accelerating development of the new prepreg for high-end applications in the sports, leisure and aircraft fields, where weight reduction and high functionality are critical. CFRP is used in areas ranging from aircraft and automobiles to infrastructure and leisure, and its required properties differ widely depending on the application. To address these demands, Teijin is developing various prepreg materials suitable for specific processing needs.
