Solvay has added Ryton R-4-300 polyphenylene sulphide (PPS) and the Amodel A-89XX series of polyphthalamide (PPA) polymers to its portfolio of thermal management solutions.
Ryton R-4-300 polymer is said to offer improved performance in tensile strength and elongation, as well as best-in-class weld-line strength. It is suitable for thermal management modules and parts where complex geometries require robust mechanical properties.
The Amodel A-89XX series further expands Solvay's PPA portfolio for thermal management. The new glass fibre reinforced PPA grades range from 30-50% glass-filled loading. Reported to offer improved dimensional stability, lower moisture uptake and enhanced chemical resistance, these products target applications such as thermostat housings, multi-coolant valves, water inlets/outlets and cross overs, and other under-the-hood components.
“One important detail underlying the introduction of these two new, very high-performing product platforms is that Solvay’s unmatched portfolio of speciality polymers offers a single source of solutions for structural components, seals and lubrication within automotive thermal management modules and multi coolant valves,” says Brian Baleno, Global Automotive Business Manager for Solvay’s Speciality Polymers business unit. “Further, choosing many of our advanced polymers allows automakers to streamline and consolidate the design of these parts.”
The new products join the company’s broader offering for automotive applications, including Solef polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and Hyflon perfluoroalkoxys (PFA) polymers for rotary valve seals, Fomblin perfluoropolyether (PFPE) lubricants and Tecnoflon fluoroelastomers (FKM) for O-rings and gaskets.
Composite products, based on polyurethane technologies from global chemical company Huntsman, are taking centre stage at a design exhibition at the Design Museum Gent, Belgium.
In late November, the 14 project partners in the MoPaHyb consortium developing a modular production plant for hybrid high-performance components wrapped up their successful efforts with a two-day symposium in Pfinztal, Germany.
