Created in late 2014 by the Latin American Composite Materials Association (ALMACO), the post-consumer reverse logistics program for composite parts will start operations in the beginning of August.
According to ALMACO, the initiative takes place in Paraná, Brazil, in an area that covers the state capital Curitiba and another 29 cities, and initially comprises bus components such as bus ceilings, railings and bumpers. During the first year, the expectation is to perform the reverse logistics of five tons of composites, whose final destination will be the co-processing in cement kilns, an alternative recognised as environmentally friendly.
“In August, the post-consumption becomes a responsibility of the manufacturers of the parts. If they do not join the program, they will be subject to expensive fines, similar to what happened in the segment of tires and oil filters,” says Paulo Camatta, Executive Manager of ALMACO. Infraction notices for companies that failed to comply with the reverse logistics agreement have already been registered in Paraná, Brazil. According to Camatta, ALMACO will also advise its members to purchase raw materials only from manufacturers registered in the program.
The practical aspects of the project will be under the responsibility of Geoquímica, which is the company responsible for collecting the post-consumer composite parts at bus workshops and ensuring their correct disposal. Located in São José dos Pinhais, Brazil, Geoquímica already works with the reverse logistics of lubricant packaging and automotive filters.
ALMACO says that the plan it has drawn up has the support of Masimon consulting and twelve companies of composites production chain: Ashland, CPIC, Jushi, Marcopolo, Mascarello, Morquímica, MVC, Neobus, Owens Corning, Reichhold, Royal Polymers and Tecnofibras. Also support the project the National Association of Bus Manufacturers (FABUS) and the Industry Interstate Association of Rail and Highway Material and Equipment (SIMEFRE).
“The works related to reverse logistics are based on tripartite committees. In addition to an industry association, such as ALMACO, it also requires the participation of government bodies. In our case, the Environmental Department of Paraná (SEMA) and the Environmental Institute of Paraná (IAP),” said Camatta.
