IYRS Friday Night Series: Conversations with Alumni

24 February 2015

On Friday, March 27, 2015, IYRS School of Technology & Trades will kick-off its Friday Night Lecture & Guest Series with stories from its own graduates who have taken their IYRS degrees to interesting and successful career experiences – both on and off the water.

The series will kick-off with two graduates of the Boatbuilding & Restoration Program: Seth Hagen, ’02 & Carter Richardson, ’04. Both came to IYRS with work experience already. Seth and Carter founded East Passage Boatwrights in 2006. The successful company is based in Bristol, Rhode Island, US and provides quality restoration, repair, and maintenance to some of New England’s most prestigious wooden boats. According to the US Chamber of Commerce, nearly 90% of start-ups fail within their first five years. The team beat the odds, including a wicked recession.

Following the first in the series, other graduates from all three programmes will talk about their own experiences and aspirations, including on May 1, Felix Schliebitz, Class ’05 and ‘11, currently part of the Volvo Ocean Race as shore crew for Team SCA. President of North Sails and famed Volvo sailor Ken Read called Felix, “one of the most can-do people I have worked with.”

IYRS is a world class experiential learning school located in Newport and Bristol, Rhode Island, that has helped prepare makers and builders for extraordinary outcomes in their work. IYRS is proud to welcome back alumni to talk about the arc of their training and career, and how they’ve been empowered to Make Anything Possible through their IYRS education.
