FBGS Forms Strategic Partnership with 4DSP

FBGS has entered into a strategic partnership with 4DSP, manufacturer of fibre optic strain, temperature and 3D shape sensing technology.

Hugo Mertens, CEO of FBGS says "Aligning with 4DSP gives our customers unique access to a cutting edge technology that perfectly complements our All Grating Fibre (AGF). We are providing the engineering community with a technology which for the first time impacts every facet of product development and deployment including design, test, implementation and monitoring. These two technologies complement one another perfectly to provide our customers the opportunity to multiplex thousands of sensors for accurate strain or temperature measurements and shape sensing”.

FBGS explains that 4DSP’s Fibre Optic Sensing System (FOSS) was developed in conjunction with NASA Dryden Flight Research Centre and acknowledged with R&D Magasine’s prestigious 2013 R&D 100 Award. It says the Fibre Optic Sensing System is now used in many different industries to revolutionise structural health monitoring, where very high density sensor networks are required on a single optical fibre.

Although developed to serve the aerospace industry, FBGS explains that applications in automotive, oil and gas, medical devices and wind energy have been established. It claims this new technology offers real-time knowledge of the behaviour of the component or entire structure, giving engineers the ability to optimise designs following FEA and other software tools used in the evaluation of new materials for longer, safer in-service life.
