Lonza states it has introduced a new range of Primaset CE resins for fast-curing composite (FCC) processes.
According to Lonza, the new resin system addresses the need for short cycle times in high-volume parts manufacturing, such as in the automotive industry, by reducing curing times of high-temperature resistant resin systems. Lonza state it specially developed this liquid resin system to allow for molding cycle times within minutes and to achieve a Glass Transition Temperature (Tg) of up to 320 °C after a post cure.
Lonza claims it has fine-tuned the processing parameters of Primaset CE for FCC manufacturing processes in particular for the RTM process in collaboration with the Institut für Verbundwerkstoffe (IVW) in Kaiserslautern, Germany. IVW is licensed to use the RocTool equipment, which is one of the fastest technologies for running the RTM process.
Dr. Josef Schröer, Lonza’s Head of Business Development, High-Performance Materials, said: “This is a breakthrough development for Primaset resins to enter high-volume composite applications. Now we are able to support the needs of lightweight design in various industries such as automotive, which previously have been out of scope. Many standard components with demanding thermal requirements, which currently still are being made from metal, can now be manufactured efficiently with composites.”
Prof. Dr. Peter Mitschang, Director of Manufacturing Science and Member of the Management Board of IVW, stated: “The project with Lonza has shown that the combination of novel materials and new manufacturing technologies may enter mass-production markets. This technology enables manufacturers to produce parts featuring extraordinary thermal properties in a continuous and therefore more efficient way.”
