Barracuda Composites won a contract with Brazilian Highway Development (DERSA), for the refit of 12 car ferry boats.
Barracuda explains that the lengths of the ferry Boat varies from 35 to 48 meters. The project aims to replace the original steel superstructure with one made with composite materials. To design the new concept the engineering division of Barracuda created a series of prefabricated composite modules.
According to DERSA, the project is expected to reduce the transit time in 30% for the average of 25.000 vehicles per day. Total investment for the new structures, refit and new docks will reach $40 million.
Barracuda says it engineered the new superstructure, rails and topsides using sandwich construction, resin infused process. The composite modules have average of 3.00 x 2.40 meters with flanges and were assembled over the steel barge. The company says the new composite design will allow overall weight reduction, fuel economy, less maintenance cost and will offer a better cosmetic design.

Applications for composites in the sports and leisure sector will be showcased by various exhibitors at Composites Europe in Stuttgart, Germany, on 6-8 November.
The programme has been announced for the second Composites in Sport Conference and Exhibition, being held at Loughborough University, UK, on 3-4 October 2018.
