Affan Innovative Structures Develop Lightweight Composite Solution using VORAFORCE Epoxy Systems from Dow

12 March 2013

Affan Innovative Structures says it has developed a flexible, lightweight composite solution for its architectural structures.

According to Affan it has achieved this by combining carbon fibre with epoxy infusion systems from The Dow Chemical Company. Other projects such as the notable Sidra Hospital in Qatar and the ultra-modern Yas Mall in Abu Dhabi benefit from this exciting innovation.

Dow will show Affan curved structures using VORAFORCE epoxy systems at stand P14 during JEC Europe 2013 Composites Exhibition in Paris, 12 – 14 March 2013.

Dow says VORAFORCE TF epoxy systems have been developed specifically for the infusion process. It claims it offers very low viscosity and low exothermicity, allowing for optimal fibre wetting and efficient processing. Due to its superior final properties, including exceptional lightweight and stiffness, the composite can enable free form shapes and dynamic curvature as typical for Affan’s structures.

Dr. Amer Affan, Founder and Managing Partner of Affan added, “At Affan, I believe that composite technology will be the new frontier of architectural design and engineering. It will offer architects the opportunity to realize structures and design projects that previously wouldn’t have been possible with traditional methods. As a structural engineer but also as a designer I am constantly looking for unique solutions, and with carbon composites and Dow’s systems I believe I have the innovation that will be the key for tomorrow’s architectural challenges.”
