British Airways (BA) and Airbus contracted Abaris for advanced composites training for their staff.
Abaris Training offers classes in the UK in advanced composite manufacturing, repair and engineering through Heatcon-Abaris Training, a partnership with Heatcon Seattle, Washington, US, a supplier of hot bonder equipment.
British Airways (BA) contracted Abaris for four separate sets of phase one and phase two classes in advanced composite fabrication and damage repair for 12 students, each from its subsidiary of British Airways Maintenance Cardiff (BAMC), near Cardiff International Airport, UK. This specialist facility performs heavy maintenance and cabin refits for BA’s long haul fleet, including 747, 767 and 777 aircraft. BA has a history of investing in training and staff development, including its multi-million dollar Flight Training Centre and the British Airways Engineering Learning Academy, the first facility approved for EASA Part 66 B1/B2 training for 787 and A380 aircraft.
Totaling 96 student slots, the BAMC training sold out scheduled class availability at the Heatcon-Abaris Training facility in Bicester, Oxfordshire, UK requiring additional classes to be scheduled to meet the demand for composite training in 2013.
Abaris also completed customised on-site classes at the Airbus Broughton, UK, production facility. Over 6,000 people in the Broughton facility assemble wings for all Airbus civil aircraft, producing over 1,000 wings a year.
Three, five-day classes were conducted to support A350 manufacturing, including informative classroom lectures and hands-on exercises in advanced composite repair techniques for possible light manufacturing rework and repair to foreign object damage. “We routinely customise training to meet specific customer needs and conduct classes on-site at customer facilities worldwide,” notes Abaris President, Mike Hoke.
Technical Instructor Corrie Volinkaty explained that 42 Airbus A350 employees were selected to receive the customised training. The training was overseen by Airbus A350 Quality Assurance representatives and additional weeks of training are being planned for later this year.
Both the British Airways and Airbus courses were organised and conducted with assistance from Tom Lane and Neil Manchett from Heatcon-Abaris Training in the U.K.
