ASTM, formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials, has awarded the Wayne W. Stinchcomb Memorial Award to Ozden Ochoa, Ph.D.Dr. Ochoa is the Associate Director for Science and Technology at the Army Research Laboratory Headquarters in Adelphi, Maryland, US, and a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, US.
The Stinchcomb Award is presented every two years at the Committee D30 spring symposium to an individual who they feel has made outstanding contributions in research, engineering, or teaching the technology of composite materials. It honours the technical and humanitarian leadership of Wayne W. Stinchcomb.
Prior to assuming her role at the Army Research Laboratory Headquarters, Ochoa was Director of Aerospace Sciences and Materials Directorate at the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research in Arlington, Virginia, US, and a Senior Technologist at the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, US. Her on-campus leadership at Texas A&M University includes service as Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Thrust Area Lead for Composite Structure and Materials at the NSF TAMU-UT Offshore Technology Research Center.
A graduate of Bogazici University in Turkey where she earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Ochoa holds both a master’s and a doctorate in mechanical engineering from Texas A&M University. Her research contributions in mechanics of composite materials and structures with applications in the aerospace, offshore, automotive and industries have resulted in more than 200 journal and proceeding publications, technical reports and one book.
A fellow of both the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Society for Composites, Ochoa is also president of the Executive Council of the International Committee for Composite Materials. She has received several awards, including the American Society for Composites-Destech Award in Composites; the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Dedicated Service Award; the Texas A&M University International Excellence Award; and the Texas A&M University Honors Program Teacher/Scholar Award and International Excellence Award.
The American Composites Manufacturers Association participated in a roundtable discussion about the IMAGINE Act. Known as the Innovative Materials in American Growth and Infrastructure, Newly Expanded (IMAGINE) Act, the new bill is designed to promote the increased use of innovative materials like fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, as well as new manufacturing methods to accelerate the deployment and extend the life of infrastructure projects.
Coriolis Composites has been selected by the National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) at Wichita State University (WSU), US, to provide a thermoplastics capable Automated Fibre Placement (AFP) system.
After the collapse of a drinking water pipeline in downtown Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Insituform was contracted to reline a close to 100 year old pipe underneath one of the canals. Water was restored successfully within five days, with minimal impact on traffic and the environment.
