The SGL Group is supporting a joint project by Singapore Polytechnic, the German Institute of Science and Technology - TUM Asia, and the Institute for Carbon Composites at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) to establish a Composite Technology Centre in Singapore.
A memorandum of understanding was signed yesterday by the university partners and ten partners from industry. The guests of honour at the ceremony in Singapore Polytechnic were the German Ambassador to Singapore, Angelika Viets, and the Bavarian State Minister for Science, Research, and the Arts, Dr Wolfgang Heubisch.
The Technology Centre aims to improve education in the fibre composites field, promote further development of the technology, and encourage technology companies to set up in the region. As a first step, it is planning to open a Composite Laboratory in April 2013.
In supporting this project the SGL Group wants to intensify its ongoing cooperation with the Institute for Carbon Composites at the TUM, the German Institute of Science and Technology – TUM Asia, and Singapore’s leading universities. Singapore is one of Asia’s important science metropolises, with high standards of teaching and research. Innovations and new concepts contributing to energy and resource efficiency in a modern megacity are promoted by the Government of this city-state.
One of the most exciting projects is the development of the world’s first electric taxi specially designed for tropical megacities at the TUM CREATE “Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise”. The scientists at TUM Asia and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Singapore are focusing not only on cutting-edge battery technologies but also on modern lightweight construction with carbon fibre composites. The material for the light yet strong CRP vehicle bodies comes from SGL Group.
Toho Tenax is introducing a high-tensile, highly shock-resistant prepreg that incorporates carbon fibre developed for aerospace applications and carbon nanotubes (CNTs).
NTPT is collaborating with the Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne - Swiss Centre of Technology (EPFL) and other partners to research discontinuous fibre composite tubes for high performance applications.
The £50 million McLaren Composites Technology Centre (MCTC) nearing completion near Sheffield, UK, was inaugurated on 16 January.
