Queensland To Develop its Fibre Composites Industry

Queensland Minister for Tourism, Manufacturing and Small Business, Jan Jarratt has launched the Bligh Government's Fibre Composites Action Plan 2011-2014.

Jarratt said the fibre composites industry generated over $1.2 billion a year and employed about 7000 Queenslanders and was ready for its next stage of development. "We have worked hard to support rapid but sustainable growth in this industry through the early stages of its development," Jarratt said.

"Fibre Composites Action Plan 2011-2014 seeks to further develop competitive critical mass in the industry, demonstrate the environmental, social and economic benefits of fibre composites, and promote their uptake in national and international supply chains. To do this we will be working very closely with the industry on a range of initiatives, including securing new market opportunities and working to increase industry uptake of fibre composites, especially in the civil construction industry where there is still a lack of familiarity about the potential of composite materials. This is an industry which can only flourish and I think the launch of the next stage of the Government's development strategy is key to positioning the industry for a lucrative and exciting future."

The announcement was made at University of Southern Queensland's Centre of Excellence in Engineered Fibre Composites (CEEFC) in Toowoomba. Toowoomba North MP Kerry Shine said "Since 2002 the Government has invested $15 million in the sector, including $7.425 million to establish the CEEFC in Toowoomba as well as $2 million support for research and development in the construction and infrastructure sectors. The CEEFC provides vital research and development support to the industry – trialling new products, putting them through their paces, allowing our companies to be innovative industry leaders."

Jarratt said Queensland had more than 200 businesses involved in fibre composites through manufacturing and engineering, design and testing, research and development, education, training and wholesale and retail services. "Much of the industry is in the marine sector, but composites are being used increasingly in sectors such as advanced manufacturing, aerospace, construction, civil engineering and infrastructure, defence, transportation, mining and chemical engineering."
