The Canadian Composites Innovation Centre (CIC) and Chopper College have partnered to create a commercial-scale, eco-friendly, high performance motorcycle enhanced with bio-composite parts developed by the CIC.
The completed EcoCycle was showcased at the BIO International Convention last week in Washington, US. Support for the project was provided through the Province's Science and Technology International Collaboration Fund (STIC) Fund-a program aimed at supporting Manitoba research and business stakeholders' participation in international R&D projects.
The EcoCycle bike includes a gas tank and fender made from bio-composite materials and CIC explain how the hemp biocomposites were grown locally in Manitoba and represent the world's first use of bio-composite materials for the gas tank components of an eco-friendly, E-85 vehicle. Additionally, the bio-composites are created through traditional manufacturing techniques with only slightly modified processing--delivering superior fibre-to-resin ratios for integrity and toughness. The tank and fender are designed to be lightweight and corrosion resistant, with adaptable styling features that only composite materials can deliver.
Presentations are being invited for the 7th edition of Ecocomp, the International Conference on Sustainable Fibres, Polymers and Composites, which will take place on 19-20 June 2019 in Coventry, UK.
TRB Lightweight Structures has developed a carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) sandwich panel door leaf using a bio-based resin and a 100% recycled foam core.
