The Composites 2010 exhibition and convention saw an 18 percent increase in attendance, according to the American Composites Manufacturers Association (ACMA), which hosts the largest composites industry event in North America.
“The positive energy and excitement felt at Composites 2010 is a good indication of where our industry is going and how ACMA is taking us there,” says Monty Felix, President of ACMA. “The revamped Composites 2010 event offered participants just what they needed: more time on the exhibit floor; expanded networking opportunities; exciting general sessions, and educational programming targeted toward emerging and growth market areas, end-use applications, and materials and equipment innovations. ACMA will be building on this as we plan for a successful Composites 2011.”

ACMA announced the “Best of Show” and other Awards for Composites Excellence (ACE) during the show’s awards luncheon on Wednesday, February 10.
The highest composites industry award, as determined by a panel of industry judges, The Best of Show Award was presented to William Kreysler & Associates, Inc. , American Canyon, Calif., for its California Bay House, a two-story residential house designed as a monocoque structure consisting of nine prefabricated fire retardant FRP panels. Recyclable foam molds were CNC-milled from 3-D data derived by laser scanning the architect’s 3-D model. Finite Element Analysis engineering was used to satisfy building code requirements for wind and seismic loads. The building consists of 1/8"" thick fire retardant FRP sandwich panels with 2"" balsa core. Since the home was built in a high fire hazard area, local codes were upgraded to require a class A roof. The exterior skin therefore was required to pass the ASTM E 108-4 and UBC 15-2 standard test method. This product demonstrates that an all-composite residential structure can meet the International Building Code (IBC) requirements, including higher than normal fire resistance requirements if properly documented.

Automotive Engineers Win Best Overall Technical Paper
A team of automotive engineers won Best Overall Technical Paper at the show for the paper ""The Influence of Bond Stand-Offs and Adhesive Cure Temperature on Bond-Line Read-Through Severity.” The paper, which also received the Best in Track Technical Paper Award: Materials, discusses the development of a method for quantifying the severity of bond-line read-through (BLRT) distortion in a Class ""A"" surface, the process variables that influence BLRT, and the validation of a finite element model capable of predicting the severity of BLRT before parts are available.
42 final papers were reviewed by the committee this year, which were narrowed to the best of six categories. Winners in each were presented plaques during the show.
