Research and Development Establishment (Engineers) (R&DE (E)) has selected Abaqus Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software from Simulia for its virtual testing of metal and composite materials.
Dassault Systèmes say that R&DE (E) has selected Abaqus FEA software for its linear and nonlinear structural analysis capabilities, as well as advanced composites modelling and simulation features. Abaqus is being used for performing not only static, but also dynamic load case simulations of impact penetration, vehicle dynamics, and geotechnical interactions.
“The bridges and vehicles developed at R&DE (E) need to withstand very harsh environments. Abaqus FEA provides accurate, realistic simulation capabilities for designing safe, reliable products,” states Mr. U.R. Gautam, group director, Integrated Management Systems Group, R&DE (E).
“Simulia India provides the best technical support in the industry,” added Dr. Makarand Joshi, head, Composite Research Center (CRC), R&DE (E).
“For several years we have been investing in R&D with a specific focus on composite simulation, including sophisticated tools for fracture and failure prediction,” stated Ken Short, VP, Strategy and Marketing, Simulia, Dassault Systèmes. ”We work proactively with our customers and industry groups to help engineers design composite structures that meet our customers performance objectives ahead of costly prototype testing. This enables customers to meet regulatory and market demands on schedule and at lower cost than before.”
An offshoot of R&DE (E)’s research includes the development of innovative prosthetic hip implants designed to meet the needs of individuals with particular focus on the physiology of the Indian population.
“We are also using Abaqus FEA to study the loads on the human bone before and after the implant to ensure reduced stress on the bone structure,” said Mr. Kiran Akella, Scientist, R&DE (E). “Abaqus is a powerful tool to analyze implant and patient interaction.”
Research & Development Establishment (Engineers), Pune was established at Dighi in Pune on 09 Feb 1962, and the Establishment’s primary role was the development of mobility and counter mobility equipment for the Corps of Engineers. Recently, the establishment has ventured into development of unmanned ground vehicles, large composite structures for high performance applications and micro-electro-mechanical systems.
