In Brazil, Ashland and Ara Química have been partners since 1999, when Ashland became associated with the company established in 1996 in the city of Araçariguama (São Paulo) – the resultant company was named Ara Ashland.
According to the agreement, Ashland will take over Ara Ashland ten years after the joint venture beginning. ""Feiplar is a good opportunity for us to announce to the market about the proximity of the transition process conclusion and, more than that, to detail Ashland's intentions regarding investments and innovations"", says Angelo Marsola Filho, Ara Ashland's president.
Among the mains news reserved to the fair, the highlight is the presentation of Envirez, soybean-based family of products. The first thermoset resins manufacturer using raw-material from renewable sources, Ashland developed a technology which allows the substitution from oil-based glycol to soybean-based glycol. ""Envirez resin is being tested for some years in the US by John Deere, agricultural machines manufacturer. Due to the excellent results, Ashland decided to begin a commercial scale production of this product"", details Rodrigo Oliveira, Ara Ashland's commercial manager.
At first, Ara Ashland will have 15 tons/month of Envirez to use. ""We already began resin pre-marketing and, at this moment, it is being tested by auto parts transformers. We shall start regular supply in 1Q 2009"", he forecasts.
Envirez soybean-based resin can be transformed into opened molds, in case of spray-up process, or closed molds, such as RTM and infusion.
Feiplar also supported the launching of the liquid phenolic resin Arofene. Produced in Campinas (São Paulo) by Ashland Resinas, an Ashland Inc.' subsidiary focused on foundry industry, it was specially developed for composites application within aggressive environments. ""As it is self-extinguishable and presents low smoke emission, Arofene is an excellent product to manufacture floor and bed grids for cables installed in offshore oil extraction platforms"", exemplifies Oliveira.
Ashland also officially launched Arotool resin at Feiplar. Based on modified epoxy, this new product is destined to the manufacturing of composites molds, as it presents very low contraction levels. ""Besides the high solids content, good wetability and high mechanical performance, Arotool resin has an excellent thermal resistance, which is a crucial characteristic for moulds manufacturers"", says the commercial manager.
