Composites One will present a working closed mould shop featuring three work cells live at IBEX 2008.
The three cells will encompass Light Resin Transfer Moulding (Light RTM), the Vacuum Infusion Process (VIP), and Closed Cavity Bag Moulding (CCBM) – outputting multiple production parts daily. All events are being held in the outdoor demo zone at the Miami Beach Convention Center, October 6-8.
“In the last several years at IBEX, we’ve demonstrated to manufacturers how closed mould processes can be used to build 16-foot sailboats and other large-scale parts, as well as output multiple parts in high volume runs,” said Composites One Vice President of Marketing, Greg Shymske. “This year, we’re taking it one step further by simulating a working closed mould shop with Light RTM, CCBM and VIP all under the same roof, so manufacturers can determine which process is best for their operation.”
According to Shymske, the live work cells, featuring Magnum Venus Plastech (MVP) injection equipment, will provide first-hand experience in the benefits and efficiencies of using closed mold processes such as less waste and fewer emissions, ultimately resulting in a cleaner work environment, greater productivity and better employee retention.
In addition to the work cells, there will be a live demonstration each afternoon at 1 PM showing resin as it flows in real-time through laminates and core products in a specially-made, hollowed-out boat hull. Each of these daily presentations will be highlighted inside the IBEX show hall using live feeds to several locations including the Composites One and MVP exhibits, booth numbers 2029 and 1824, respectively.
“Manufacturers will be able to see for themselves how resin is evenly distributed throughout the mold, resulting in parts that are more consistent and have better surface cosmetics than those made through traditional open mold processes,” said Shymske. “They will also be able to see cost comparisons between closed mold and traditional open mold processes, including case studies and data sheet hand-outs.”
Throughout the event, industry experts such as Doug Smith of RTM North and John Alanko of Arctek will be on hand to answer attendees’ questions about Light RTM, CCBM and VIP, discuss equipment and materials, and display finished parts built through each process. MVP will also host industry expert Alan Harper in their booth and he will present a live closed mold demonstration daily, which will be simulcast in the Composites One demo tent.
The live demonstration and work cells at IBEX 2008 are the culmination of a joint effort between Composites One in partnership with 3M, Airtech Advanced Materials Group, Alcan Composites (Airex, Baltek and Lantor brands), Arctek Inc., Arkema, Cook Composites & Polymers, Chemtrend, Chomarat, ITW Plexus, Magnum Venus Plastech, Owens Corning, Progress Plastiques, RTM North, and Vectorply. Composites Manufacturing and Composites Technology are the official media sponsors of the event. “Without their support, it would be very difficult to accomplish a live event of this duration and magnitude,” added Shymske.
