MC-21 Awarded $1.1 Million Contract from U.S. Army Research Laboratory

14 August 2008

MC-21 has been awarded a $1.1 Million Cooperative Agreement from the Army Research Laboratory to provide research and development in the area of affordable light-weight Metal Matrix Composites (MMC) for Lightweight Armoured Ground Vehicles.

The award provides for the first year of a five year agreement. Work will be performed at MC-21’s facilities in Carson City, Nevada.

Founded in 1994, MC-21 is a leader in development and commercialization of high-performance, cost-effective particle reinforced aluminium metals. Under the contract MC-21 will evaluate prototype MMC formulations for vehicle armour applications and scale up both the geometric size and production capacity of its manufacturing processes, all the while reducing production costs. R&D will be performed on new processes for the hot rolling and squeeze casting of these new, advanced MMC materials.

Said President of MC-21, Dr. David Schuster, “We are proud to be working with the Army Research Laboratory, providing our Armed Forces with superior protection that is both effective and affordable. We look forward to further enhancing our processes and materials, ultimately creating excellent MMC armor products with optimized performance and light weight to better protect our troops.”
