Icotec wins Materialica Design Award in Munich

24 October 2007

Icotec ag in Altstätten has received the Materialica Design Award 2007 in the surfaces category ‚ in Munich.

For the third time in a row the Swiss company has received this international innovation and design award for one of their innovative products. This year it was the functional coating of the composite implants made of carbon fibre reinforced PEEK that convinced the jury.

Icotec has been a pioneer in using carbon fibre reinforced PEEK for implants, which has already earned Icotec several awards and worldwide recognition. Now Icotec has extended the range of properties of their implants with a titanium coating on the composite biomaterial. “The possibility of partial or full coating of our composite implants is for us a logical further development in order to establish the Icotec implants in modern day medicine. The rough surface coating enables a strong bone attachment on the implant. This is a desirable effect if the implant remains in the body. Unlike the only slight bone attachment on uncoated composite implants: ideal for applications where the implant needs to be removed after healing. With partial coating we are able to control the strength of the bone adhesion according to the application’s needs”, said Roger Stadler, the Managing Director of Icotec. “It will take some months before a coated composite implant will be implanted in a patient but already today we can say that the start of the project has been successful. The first mechanical tests have shown great results” stated Roger Stadler.
