RocTool has specialized in rapid transformation of composites by electromagnetic induction and is now adapting this technology for plastic injection.
Alex Guichard, the CEO of RocTool said that “this is a key stage in RocTool’s development. Our collaboration with the Tier 1 Visteon Group has allowed us to validate the feasibility and to identify the advantages of using this technology. “
In the automobile industry, the thickness of the part has not always been chosen by the mechanical function, but more often by the constraints of moulding. The injection by induction can be applied to thin or overmoulded parts, any type of cosmetic part and materials with strong viscosity, like elastomers.
The current plastic injection procedure requires very high speed and pressure: As the preheated material is on a cold mould it solidifies, therefore needing a considerable pressure to fill the mould. The material is then stressed and shrinkage lines can appear on the surface, which explains the difficulty to obtain flat parts.
RocTool proposes an alternative, by means of, rapidly heating (5 to 10 seconds) the surface of the tool by electromagnetic induction at a temperature close to that of the injected plastic, therefore the rheology conditions are ideal. The resin and the tool are at the same temperature and the flow is achieved without any effort.
Alex Guichard specifies, “The development of our technology and its industrialization are in progress and should be available within 12 -24 months. We are developing two tools equipped with the technology and a demonstration will be installed in France by the end of 2007.” RocTool initially proposes licences of development to resins providers and transformers of parts eager to test the technology for their applications, and secondly the licenses of its patents, and the know how to use this process in production. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) selected a lightweight FiberSPAN fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) bridge deck, manufactured by Composite Advantage, for the Rugg Bridge on Route 57.
