National Composite Center to Showcase Key Technologies

15 October 2006

The National Composite Center (NCC) will showcase key technologies including Rapid Fibre Preforming, Long Fibre Thermoplastics (LFT), closed moulding and testing services at Composites & Polycon 2006.

In addition to seeing the types of sample parts these technologies can produce, visitors will be able to interact with composite design experts. The centre’s design optimization line-up has been organized by Dr. Brian Knouff under a new company Composites DOC, LLC, housed at NCC. , the company expands the range of design resources available to customers. To help advance the fast growing market of nano-composites, NCC received Wright Frontier Grants to house and support three projects. The centre received $1.5 million for production, acceleration and commercialization of a new fabrication process for carbon nanofibres and nanotube membranes, and a grant for $1,800,000 is being used to launch a program for nano-enhanced sheet moulding compound (SMC). A Center for Multifunctional Polymer Nanomaterials and Devices (CMPND) is also being established at NCC,

In September NCC held a ribbon cutting ceremony to recognize its newest investment in the composite industry – the Dayton Campus for Advanced Materials Technologies (DC-AMT). DC-AMT has been established to develop advanced materials and manufacturing processes, support high-tech tenants and nurture lean manufacturing and emerging technologies and products.
