TPI Composites will open its newest production facility in Springfield, Ohio, to support its Growth in the defence and transportation sectors/
The 45,000 square-foot facility, which is scheduled to open later this month, will produce a newly designed light-weight platform deck to be used in the Gunderson Auto-Max freight car. TPI’s Ohio operation expects to produce eight railcar decks per day and initially employ 36 people. The new composite deck will replace the traditional steel decks, which are twice as heavy and require more work and time to manoeuvre during the loading and unloading process.
“With TPI’s composite decks, what took more than a minute and a half and a significant effort to crank into place will now take mere seconds,” said Steven C. Lockard, president and chief executive officer of TPI. “This increase in efficiency will save considerable amounts of time and money.”
Gunderson Auto-Max cars carry most types of sport utilities, crossover vehicles, compact pickups, and minivans on a tri-level configuration.The Auto-Max decks are just one product slated to be manufactured in TPI’s Ohio plant that will be made with TPI’s SCRIMP process tools. TPI’s Ohio plant is expected to also manufacture several products with heavy-duty military vehicle applications, including a new composite hood, armour-ready cabs, and all-composite vehicle bodies. In all, TPI aims to employ as many as 300 people within three years.
“In each of these military products, the objective is to reduce weight, improve durability, and provide better protection for our soldiers,” Lockard said. “As these products move into volume production, our plan is to transfer them here to Springfield.”
