AltusGroup, Inc, has welcomed Owens Corning as its newest innovation partner in the development of CarbonCast precast technology.
Initially, AltusGroup intends to explore the use of Owens Corning’s Pinkcore extruded polystyrene rigid foam insulation, which is typically positioned between the inner and outer wythes of CarbonCast Insulated Wall Panels and behind the concrete faces of CarbonCast Architectural Panels.
As part of AltusGroup’s industry technology partnering effort, Owens Corning will contribute to the development of innovations in precast concrete, currently centring on the use of carbon fibre reinforcing to improve strength, lower weight and reduce corrosion in precast components. CarbonCast uses C-GRID, a resin-bonded carbon fibre grid supplied by Techfab LLC, as a secondary reinforcement to replace steel mesh and shear trusses in precast concrete products such as architectural cladding, insulated sandwich wall panels, hardwall panels and double tees. CarbonCast technology is also claimed to be a durable, lightweight alternative for foundations, facades and deck panels on residential structures, such as apartments, hotels and dormitories.
Acceptance of CarbonCast since its mid-2004 introduction has been rapid. More than 6 million square feet of products have been erected or sold to date, and millions more square feet of projects are in development.
During the past six months, AltusGroup has also welcomed Gate Precast and Heldenfels Enterprises, Inc. as Producer Members – companies licensed to manufacture select CarbonCast products in particular geographies –and Degussa Admixtures, Inc., Sika and JVI as Innovation Partners – technology suppliers who contribute to the improvement of precast performance.
