Composite manufacturers who need a high-temperature corrosion-resistant resin and cast polymer manufacturers who want to optimize systems that are both pigmented and filled will find help in technical papers presented by AOC scientists during Composites 2005.
The papers are “New High Temperature Resistant Vinyl” by Bruce Curry, Product Leader – Corrosion Resins, and “Colorants and Their Unique Relationship with Fillers in Cast Polymer Products” by Mark S. Harber, Product Manager – Colorants.
New High Temperature Resistant Vinyl Ester
Curry presents test results that demonstrate the performance of a developmental Vipel novolac vinyl ester with a 35% styrene content and a heat distortion temperature of 330°F (165°C). The high temperature novolac vinyl ester is suited for reinforcing thermoplastic liners in dual-laminate applications where high heat resistance is needed. The new vinyl ester is also suited for hot chemical environments such as pipe that carries hot gases or for quench vessels.
The paper includes charts that demonstrate that the high temperature cast and laminate tensile properties of the high temperature vinyl ester are significantly higher when compared to the properties of both conventional novolac and bisphenol A vinyl esters.
Colorants and Their Unique Relationship with Fillers
Harber’s paper covers methods for troubleshooting and preventing potential colour issues associated with thermoset cast polymer products. The tests measured the lightness value of dry fillers as well as fillers that were wetted in a low colour resin system. an alumina trihydrate and a calcium carbonate that showed lower matrix lightness values were combined with titanium dioxide to study the change in lightness with step-wise increases of pigmentation levels.
Harber concludes that using filler dry brightness values cannot always predict the final matrix mixture properties. Common filler types tested in the dry state were very close in lightness values. However, colour differences could be seen when matrix mixtures were measured.
