Tsunami Composite Boat Project Gathers Pace

Additional publicity for the RTM charitable boat project orchestrated by Plastech TT hasten delivery of first boat to Sri Lanka.

Following last months news story on the Plastech TT orchestrated project to build boats for Tsunami project using RTM technology, recent developments by Plastech’s moulding technicians have added further impetus to the project.

Plastech had initially contacted a group of composite suppliers who have pledged sufficient materials to initially produce 50 new fishing boats for the Sri Lankan inshore fishermen. These initial pledges will produce fishing boats to the value of more than 300,000 Euros!

Using the latest glass fibre manufacturing technique called Light RTM, one set of production moulds and a set of masters for the production of further moulds on site, will be commissioned and then air freighted, along with four of the company’s resin injection machines direct to the production units in the coastal disaster zones in Sri Lanka.

Plastech now hope that the first Light RTM mould will be ready for commissioning by early April 2005. SeaRay Boats (Brunswick, US) have recently joined the project with a pledge to the fund with the specific aim of helping with the cost of skilled labour to manufacture the first LRTM moulds.

After a local news item shown on BBC television, it is now felt that sufficient impact has been generated for the project's manager to believe that government assistance may be offered to fly the first complete moulded boat out to Colombo in Sri Lanka.

Once delivered, sea trials will be carried out prior to the production of the first 50 hulls to begin. These hulls and decks will initially be produced using the resin, glass fibre and gel coat that has been generously donated by the group of materials suppliers who service the needs of the composites industry throughout the world.

The moulds, machines and materials combined with the latest technology and training will enable them to begin the immediate production on the ground of 100 fishing craft per month. This figure will rise rapidly to 400 per month once further duplicate mould sets are produced locally from the master patterns.
